On Monday June 13, the Grade 2's will be participating in a program called "Arts comes to school." It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to engage in hands on art using modelling clay. Our class has been split between two sessions (9:30-10:30am & 2:30-3:30pm) and we need volunteers. Should you be able to join us and want to get your hands dirty, please consider joining us. If you are able to join us, please write a note in your child's agenda indicating your availability.

Tomorrow is our school's open house. Doors open at 8:45 for parents to walk around with their child and explore all the fun things going on at St. Anne. You are encouraged to stay as students begin their first block. Students will be working through math stations focused on money.
I unfortunately will be missing out on all the smiles and excitement as your children show off all that they are to be proud of in our classroom. I have been sick the past few days and am still unable to return to work. Ms. B has been taking such good care of the class and she is enjoying her time with them. I look forward to hearing all about your visits when I return to work.

Yesterday was such a beautiful mass at St. Patrick Church. A big congratulations to all my Grade 2's who received their sacrament of First Holy Communion. Everyone looked wonderful and did so well! I am so proud of you guys!
This week is Earth Week. We have a number of initiatives and activities planned. Below is an outline of the activities. Be sure to ask your child all about our contests for this week. A reminder, please return all ECO parade permission slips to school.

Today students shared their photos of joy with the class. A number of students have yet to complete this task and we have decided to extend the deadline of this task until this coming Thursday (March 31). We reviewed the goals of the task on the workspace as well as the expectations. We are pros now! Students have to be the ones who log into Hapara as they have been granted access (sorry moms and dads). We were reminded of Mr. Yeow's presentation this morning... it takes ALOT of photos to come up with a 'just right' one.
For those students who did submit their task, they will need to add an additional slide to their slide deck (insert - new slide) and submit a new photo taking into consideration our success criteria. This can be a completely different photo from the original photo (ie. new subject). PLEASE DO NOT DELETE YOUR FIRST PHOTO ATTEMPT!!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful March Break. From the sounds of all the stories, students had a great time and wonderful memories were made.
This is going to be a short week and a full one at that. This week students will be focusing on Holy Week. I encourage your child to share with you the activities and tasks we have been working on. In particular, please ask your child about the Joy photography task that they will need to accomplish during the Easter long weekend.

Tomorrow the Grade 2's will be receiving their Sacrament of First Reconciliation. If your child is participating in this special evening, please be at St. Patrick Church at 6:20pm. We are hoping to begin the evening at 6:30pm. Students are invited to sit with their parents and will be invited up to the front when it is their time to go to confession. Parents, you will be presenting your child to the priest.
I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow evening.

In math, we have wrapped up our unit on patterning and are moving on to double digit addition and subtraction. The standard algorithm of borrowing and regrouping will be used but focus will also be placed on students using other strategies to add and subtract larger numbers (using an open number line and using friendly numbers by example).
In language, we continue to practice making super sentences. Try to get your child to explain what is a super sentence. We are also beginning a light study on procedural writing.
In Science, we continue to explore air and water in our environment, in particular how we impact the quality of our air and water and what consequences this might lead to.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. It hIs hard to believe that we are only three weeks away from the March Break. Last week was a crazy week with both family day as well as two snow days. Thankfully we were able to get all caught up on Thursday and Friday.
This week marks our four week of sacrament preparation. Your child's reconciliation prep book will come home at some point this sweet so students can get caught up on what might still be incomplete. Please note that even though your child may not be receiving their sacrament of first reconciliation, their participating in the preparation is mandatory as it is part of our grade 2 religion program. For those of you whose are receiving their first reconciliation, a reminder of the rite of enrolled end masses that are to take place next weekend (February 27-28). You only need to attend one of these masses (Saturday at 5 or Sunday at 9 or 11). Reconciliation is scheduled for March 9th at 6:30pm at St.Patrick Church.

How the weeks are flying by. So much going on in the days/weeks to come! Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and students will be grouping together in the gym second block for our Ash Wednesday liturgy. Ash Wednesday coincides with our Reconciliation preparation we began last week. Despite if your child will be receiving their sacraments this year, everyone will be completing all the preparation tasks as this is also a component of our grade 2 religion program.
A thank you to all those who have returned their sacraments information form. For those of you who have yet to return their form, please do as soon as possible. The church needs these forms in order to prepare for upcoming sacrament dates. A question that a number of parents have had concerns the enrollment masses the weekend of february 27-28. You only need to attend one of the three possible mass times.
Last week, students sold their bookmarks as part of our npdl Joy project. They worked so hard on their creations and as a result, the demand from St. Anne students was high. As a grade 2 whole, students raised over $600!!! We are so proud of our students! Stay tuned to hear how students have decided to spread 'Joy' with their fundraised money.
In Math, students are wrapping up their patterning unit and will begin exploring two digit addition and subtraction. Although the standard algorithm will be used, students will also be encouraged to explore other ways to use mental math strategies to complete the same task (ie. using friendly numbers, open number lines...).
In language, we will be starting our unit on procedural writing.
In science, students continue to explore air and water in the environment. Ask your child about our bean experiment that we will be starting on Thursday.
A reminder to please bring in a shoe box or empty kleenex box for our valentine's craft.
For those of you who are interested in giving out Valentine cards, here is a list of students in our class...

Tomorrow students will be participating in a fun afternoon exploring air and water. Scientist in schools will be guiding students through a variety of hands on activities to deepen their understanding of air and water in the environment. A big thank you to all the parents who are able to help make this afternoon possible. If you are volunteering tomorrow, please be at the school by 12:30pm so that our presenter can explain to you how you will be supporting our students during this fun afternoon. I apologize in advance for not being able to personally send a note in your child's agenda noting the time that you will be needed at the school.
In math, we have begun exploring patterns that change by two attributes using a variety of classroom manipulatives including lego.
In language, students completed a google doc on the highlights of their holiday. I am very impressed with how well the students are doing logging in to their accounts. Please encourage your child to share with you their work using the student portal (first name.last name@ocsbstudent.ca).

Welcome back everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful time this holiday break with family and friends. There was definitely a lot of energy in the classroom today. We will be using the stories and tales that the students wanted to share with each other as a means of learning how to use google docs. Students will be working on a recount of their 'holiday highlights' using google docs. We hope to share these recounts with you once they are complete.
In Math, we will be starting our new unit on patterning. We will also be starting our new unit in Science on Air and Water. An information form went home today talking about our upcoming Scientists in Schools presentation on air and water. If you are able to volunteer next Monday (January 11) from 1:00 - 3:40pm, please complete the form and send it back to class in your child's agenda.
The January homework calendar went home today. There is one mistake on the calendar... our scientist in school's date is wrong. Please adjust the tasks on January 11 and 13th accordingly.
